Cypress Flute Circle -
August 26, 2006 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm
The August meeting of The Spring Cypress Flute Circle
was hosted at John and Sandy Czerwinski's home in
Spring. We had a turnout of 9 members. We would like
to welcome two new members, Dottie Taylor from Houston
and Vicky Williamson from Spring. In our raffle drawing,
Dottie won a CD "Rhythm to Accompany the Native American
Flute". Thanks to Larry Evans for his donation of
the CD.. In two other drawings, Larry won a "Spirit
Stone" and Vicki Williamson went home with a Rainstick
from Creations Unlimited. The rainstick was decorated
by Mal'ora Navajo and her friends in Tuscon, Arizona.
Larry Evans, with Mockgingbird
Flutes, drove all the way from his home in Euless, Texas to join our circle. He brought more of his flutes for us to try and to buy. We really appreciate Larry for taking his time to drive down to our meetings each month. We really enjoy having him.
There was a lot of playing at the open mic, eating, and visiting. Sandy and Vicky joined together to give a lesson in breathing to our new member, Dottie Taylor. Although Vicky Williamson is new to the NAF, she is an accomplished classical/jazz flute player and a very experienced flute teacher.
She did an excellent job in explaining breathing to Dottie who has never played a wind instrument before.
We discussed getting a group together to attend the
"Flute Mini Retreat" in Dallas, Texas on Saturday, September 23. This event is being put on by the Heart of Cedar Native American Flute Circle". A few members talked about getting a carpool together to drive to Dallas for the day to attend the workshop. If you are interested in attending this event, please contact us and we'll put you in touch with others that are planning to attend.
Please check the calendar for the next scheduled flute circle and for upcoming events thru the end of 2006.
Cypress Flute Circle - July 22, 2006 5:00 pm to 9:00
The July meeting of The Spring Cypress Flute Circle
was held in Sandy Czerwinski's home in Spring. We
had a great turnout..14 people. We would like to welcome
2 new members, Heather Byford from the Woodlands and
Anne Gorman from the Champions area. Heather Byford
has been playing NAF for about 3 years. Anne Gorman
plays classical and baroque flute but is new to the
Native American flute. Anne also won the drawing for
a new rainstick.
Two of our Texas flute makers, Larry Evans with Mockgingbird
Flutes and Bill Warner with Chaparrall Flutes brought
their flutes to show and sell. Several members went
home with new flutes (imagine that!!). We were also
introduced to another local flute maker, Mike Jones
and his son Brendan. Mike makes ocarinas and bamboo
flutes. Hopefully Mike will bring some of his ocarinas
and flutes to our meeting in August.
At the August Flute Circle, Sam Calderara, Mary Nelis,
and Sandy Czerwinski have volunteered to give some
one on one lessons to some of the newer members. While
they are teaching, we will have the open mic set up
for anyone not involved in a private lesson. If anyone
has a special request for the next circle, please
send an e-mail with your ideas.
Spring Cypress Flute Circle -
Old Town Spring - June 10, 2006
Saturday, June 10, 2006 was the first official gathering
of the Spring Cypress Flute Circle. Several of our members
met in Old Town Spring to play. We set up and started
playing at 11:00 AM and we played until about 1:30 pm.
We set up in a little courtyard on the porch of "The
Groove Shack". There was a lot of duet playing, drumming,
and solo playing. It was hot but everyone had a good
time. We were invited by some of the surrounding shops
to come back to play this winter when the weather is
not quite so hot. We'll keep you posted.
Autumns Child Concert - May 7, 2006
We were really excited to be one of three stops on the
Mark Holland and Autumn's Child
first Texas tour... The concert was held at The
Church at Creeks End in Spring, Tx. In spite of being
on the road for 5 days and playing 3 concerts back to
back, Autumn's Child put on an incredible concert.
No one left the concert disappointed.
What an amazing group of performers...In addition to
Mark on the NAF, we met Janice Rieman on the cello,
Ali Soltanshahi on percussion, and Erin Wolf on the
classical guitar. Exciting concert...Hopefully we can
talk Autumn's Child into returning next year to do another
